Hi! I’m the creator of Between the Stumps, a journal about gardening and living with what we have.

My garden is on a piece of land that was fully wooded when we built. Stumps were not dug, hills were not leveled. Vegetables and flowers grow in semi-permanent raised beds that are placed, literally, between the stumps. Tree roots and shallow soil atop solid ledge add to the challenge.

Abstractly, this is about making what you have work for your purpose. I believe this kind of thinking is what makes a modest vegetable garden possible for anyone.
